How and Why to Patch Test a Skincare Product First
Patch testing is a simple and important—but often an ignored! step that could identify an allergy or irritation to an ingredient.
It is so tempting to slather on a new skincare product. And we totally understand! You waited so long, it finally arrives and you just want to dive right in. But wait! Before you introduce anything different into your routine, it is worthwhile to do a patch test first. Why? Even with products that are made from super pure, natural ingredients, and it has been tested to the highest standard and meets all compliance regulatory check boxes, like NAYA Skincare, there’s a chance of developing an allergic reaction or irritation. For that reason, we recommend a very basic patch-test. It’s not foolproof but a good habit to incorporate into your regimen.
But what is a Patch Test?
A patch test is a simple way of checking whether your skin will react to new products such as make-up, skincare, body care or others. Patch testing is a best practice when introducing a new product to your skincare regime to check for allergies.
Why is it Important?
The reason you should patch test a product before you use it is to avoid the potential severity of an allergic reaction. Allergies can cause anything from minor redness to painful swelling or worse. Patch testing is important because it will help you to be sure that you can safely use a new skin care product.
Not just sensitive skin types should patch test, everyone should patch test new skin care products to save ourselves from future headaches!
Here's why
Even if you don’t have sensitive skin, certain formulations or ingredients (natural or otherwise), can irritate even normal skin types. This can result in red and angry rashes, or dry, itchy and flaky skin. Not only irritated skin, products with thick and heavy emollients like coconut oil can also cause unwanted breakout-related reactions like clogging and acne. So repeat after us: "I shall always patch test new skin care before slathering and diving in."
So how to Patch-Test a Skincare Product
Let's talk you through the Patch testing steps. It is simple. Only bear in mind to invest a day to do your patch test properly.
If you got a little excited and have already rubbed the new serum all over your face, don’t worry. When you feel or see any redness, itching or discomfort, just wash your skin with a gentle cleanser, then follow up with your go-to moisturiser. You can also treat the area with a soothing product, such as the Everyday Glow Serum or Hydration Mask.
Use a Clear Patch of Skin
Choose an area on your skin that is easily accessible to test the new skincare product. Choose an area that you can comfortably apply the new skincare product and you can comfortably leave it on for 24 hours. For example, you can use the crook of your elbow if you don't want to use and apply it on your skin. Otherwise, another suitable area is along the jar line.
Here’s how to do a patch test, step-by-step:
- Wash the Area first: Wash your face and neck and pat dry with a clean towel. Apply a small amount of your new skincare product to the area right behind your ear or jar area.
- Apply a small amount on your chosen area: Gently rub in the product and keep this area dry.
- Wait 24 hours: Analyse your skin over the next 24 hours. If you notice any redness, burning, itching or irritation at any time, wash the area right away and don’t use this product.
- Remember: To patch test one new product at a time—not many at the same time—so you can see how your skin responds to this specific product.
What You’re Looking For
If you’re allergic to the skincare product, you may notice some pink or red color on the area, but this should fade after a short while. If the redness does not fade, then you may have a mild allergy. If the skin is red, raised, itchy, or covered with a rash, then it is likely you have a severe allergy to the product. If you’re not sure, or you’ve had severe reactions to skincare products in the past, it’s a good idea to talk to your doctor or an allergy specialist.
NOTE: Please apply those steps on leave-on products. They are designed to stay on the skin. Leave off products need to always be carefully washed off. Leave off products are designed to stay on your skin for a limited period of time due to the intensity of the product and results it is suppose to drive.
In addition, if you have been diagnosed with sensitive or ultra-sensitive skin, we would recommend you conduct an allergy test at your dermatologist to understand if you have an allergy against a specific ingredient.
