Superoxide dismutase, usually shortened to SOD, is an antioxidant enzyme your body makes itself. It is not a plant extract or a fashionable new molecule. It is part of your basic cellular machinery, and versions of it exist in almost every living thing that uses oxygen.
Enzymes are biological catalysts: proteins that speed up a specific chemical reaction. SOD's particular reaction is converting superoxide into less reactive substances. It needs trace minerals to do this, which is why you will see SOD described with copper, zinc or manganese attached: those metals sit at the working end of the enzyme.
SOD is not something skincare invented. It is one of the oldest antioxidant defences in biology, and you are producing it right now.
What does SOD actually do?
Every time your cells produce energy using oxygen, they generate reactive by-products. Superoxide is one of the first. Left unmanaged, reactive species like this can damage lipids, proteins and DNA. That accumulated damage is what people loosely call oxidative stress.
SOD is the enzyme that handles the first step. It converts superoxide into oxygen and hydrogen peroxide, and other enzymes then break the hydrogen peroxide down further. It is a relay, not a solo act: SOD passes the problem down a chain, and the chain only works if the whole system is intact.

Here is the part most ingredient pages leave out.
SOD is an enzyme, which means it is a protein, which means it is large. Large molecules do not casually cross the stratum corneum. That is not a flaw in SOD, it is basic skin biology, and it applies to plenty of impressive-sounding actives. It means that putting SOD in a formula and getting SOD to do something are two very different achievements.
Enzymes are also fussy. They need the right conditions to stay functional: pH, temperature, the absence of things that denature them. An enzyme that has lost its structure is just protein. So the questions that actually matter are whether the formula is built to keep it stable, at what level it is included, and what else in the formula is doing the work.
None of that appears on an ingredient list. An INCI list tells you what is in the bottle, in rough order. It does not tell you concentration, stability, delivery, or whether any of it survives to the point of use.
"Contains SOD" is a fact about a label. It is not a claim about your skin.
This is the same pattern we write about constantly: the industry teaches you to shop for a named molecule, when what determines the result is the formulation, the delivery and the whole product working together. Today it is SOD. Yesterday it was zinc oxide. Tomorrow it will be something else. The mistake stays the same: we judge the hero instead of the formula.

How to read an SOD claim
If you are looking at a product because it mentions SOD, these are the questions worth asking.
- Where does it sit on the ingredient list?Near the end usually means a small amount. That is not automatically bad, but it should temper a headline claim built around it.
- Is the brand claiming a result, or describing an ingredient?"Contains superoxide dismutase" is a description. "Reverses damage" is a claim, and in the EU a regulated one.
- What else is in the formula?A well-built antioxidant and barrier-supporting formula is worth more than a token amount of an impressive enzyme in an otherwise unremarkable base.
- Does the routine make sense without it?Daily sun protection does more against oxidative stress than any antioxidant you can buy. Antioxidants support that; they do not replace it.
