Crow's Feet and Laugh Lines: Prevention and Care

Laughter brings joy and is healthy! However, strong facial expressions, such as laughing, can put strain on the skin, making fine lines visible through everyday facial movements. The laugh lines at the outer corners of the eyes are often called crow’s feet, due to their resemblance to a bird's foot. Although these lines usually look charming, they can be bothersome to many when they deepen. But can you prevent them, and if so, how?

How Do Crow's Feet Form?

With the natural aging process, the skin loses its firmness and elasticity. Fine lines that disappear quickly in younger years (e.g., after sleeping) start to persist. Additionally, the skin around the eyes is much thinner and more delicate, making it more prone to wrinkles. Therefore, crow's feet are often the first visible lines on the face.

But it’s not just facial muscle movement that causes wrinkles around the eyes. Factors like sun exposure (or squinting in the sun), smoking, dehydration, and poor diet can exacerbate them. Don’t worry, there are ways to care for and prevent crow's feet.

How Can I Prevent Crow's Feet?

To care for crow's feet, it’s essential to keep the skin around the eyes well-hydrated. A moisturizing eye serum, specially designed for the sensitive skin around the eyes, is an excellent foundation. Apply it in the morning and evening, gently massaging to boost circulation and help the active ingredients penetrate deeply into the skin.

Furthermore, it’s crucial to protect the skin from harmful UV rays, which can contribute to fine lines and wrinkles. Always apply sunscreen with at least SPF 50 daily. The reason I am saying Sun Cream SPF 50 because on average we are applying far less than we actually need to to get the full UVA and UVB protection. So in this case; better more than too little. Sunglasses can also be a smart addition to protect the eye area further.

To prevent crow's feet and wrinkles in general, maintaining healthy lifestyle habits is essential. Follow a balanced diet that is anti-inflammatory and rich in antioxidants and vitamins to promote skin health and give it a healthy glow. Smoking, alcohol consumption, sugar, and poor sleep can accelerate skin aging.

Additionally, regular face massages and exercises can help strengthen muscles and tighten the skin. Avoid rubbing the eye area too often or too roughly, as this can irritate or damage the skin, promoting wrinkle formation. Gently smoothing around the eyes (ideally with cream to avoid stressing the skin) can help relax the face and smooth wrinkles.

Optimal Care for a Hydrated Eye Area

For preventing dryness, reducing wrinkles, and supporting skin regeneration, a rich moisturizing treatment for the eyes is effective. Our regenerating eye cream helps protect the delicate eye area and supports cell renewal. With Edelweiss from the Swiss Alps, anti-aging Resveratrol, and protective upcycled blueberry seed oil, it can reduce lines and wrinkles while supporting regeneration. Hyaluronic acid hydrates, antioxidants like Vitamin E protect the skin from harmful environmental factors, and various ceramides strengthen and regenerate the skin structure.

The regenerating eye cream is specifically designed to combat dryness and the first signs of aging, like fine lines, crow's feet, and loss of elasticity. It’s especially suitable for dry and mature skin but can also be used by sensitive skin types and for those with sensitive eyes. As a complement to the rich eye cream, the line and wrinkle filler is a great option for mature or dry eye areas. NKM’s Well-Aging product supports regeneration and visibly reduces fine wrinkles, making it suitable for the eye area as well. Our tip: You can combine both products. First, apply the line and wrinkle filler and then the regenerating eye cream. In cosmetics, we always apply from liquid to solid to help the active ingredients absorb better into the skin.

Can Face Yoga Help?

Face Yoga is a natural method to strengthen facial muscles, tighten the skin, and reduce wrinkles. Specifically, it can help with wrinkles around the eyes, such as crow's feet, by targeting and relaxing the affected muscles and improving circulation.

An effective exercise to relax the muscle near the eyes:

Apply some cream to your fingertips and gently stroke upward and downward on both sides of your eyes simultaneously (one hand goes up, the other down). Do this for at least one minute and repeat. This relaxes the muscle around your eyes, smoothing the fine lines. This is especially relaxing before bed.

Another effective exercise involves alternating between a "lion's face" and a "pout" to strengthen the cheek muscles and tighten the skin around the eyes.

For visible results, it's crucial to practice Face Yoga regularly. Perform the exercises daily for about 10-15 minutes, and combine them with a suitable and high-quality skincare ritual.

In addition to high-quality and efficacious skincare, other essential factors for beautiful, healthy skin include a healthy diet, plenty of water, restful sleep, and regular physical activity.
