Which Serum Does Your Skin Actually Need?
- The serum is the treat step. It is the product in your routine built to deliver actives at a meaningful dose and address the concern you actually care about. Everything else supports it.
- There is no single best serum. There is the serum that treats what your skin is doing right now, which is a different question.
- Skin focus, not skin type. Skin is a living organ. It changes with seasons, hormones and stress, so a label you were given at 25 is not a life sentence.
- One serum in the morning, one in the evening. Stacking serums does not multiply results, it multiplies variables.
- Cell Resilience is a serum too. We call it a pre-serum because it is gel-based and lighter, so it goes on first and prepares the skin for the treatment serum that follows.
- Order: pre-serum, then treatment serum, on clean damp skin, then moisturiser, then SPF in the morning.
How to choose a serum: start here
Not with the shelf. Not with a list of the top ten brands. Start with a single question: what is your skin doing at the moment?
Not what it did in your twenties. Not what a magazine quiz once told you your type was. What it is doing this month, in this weather, at this point in your life. Answer that honestly and the choice narrows to one or two options rather than fifty.
One serum doing a clear job beats three doing overlapping ones. Especially if your skin is reactive.
What a serum actually does
The serum is the treat step. It is the one product in a routine whose entire job is to deliver active ingredients, at a dose that does something, to the concern you actually want addressed. A cleanser removes. A moisturiser supports and seals. The serum is where the work happens.
That is why the format exists. A serum is typically lighter and more fluid than a cream, allowing it to absorb readily and deliver a concentrated active system before richer supporting layers are applied. Ours are highly dosed and built for performance, because a serum that is not is just an expensive step.
Which is the honest caveat worth knowing: serum is a category name, not a certification. Any brand can print the word on a bottle. It does not oblige them to put anything meaningful inside it, and plenty do not. A watery "serum" at sixty pounds can be mostly water and marketing.
"The word on the bottle is not the proof. The formula is. A serum should earn its place through what it is built to do."
So the question is never whether serums work. A well-formulated serum is the most targeted part of your routine. The question is whether the one in your hand was built to be, and that is a formulation question, not a label question. We explore the category confusion further in toner, essence or serum.
Skin focus, not skin type
We do not believe in fixed skin types. Skin is a living organ. It changes with the seasons, with your hormones, with your stress levels, with how you have slept. The idea that you are permanently "combination" or "dry" is a merchandising convenience, not a biological fact.
So instead of a type, we work with a skin focus: what your skin needs supporting right now. That focus will change, and it should. The woman whose skin is reactive and flushing in July may need something quite different in January, and neither answer is wrong.
This is also why the honest answer to "what is the best serum for mature skin" is another question: do you need barrier support, renewal, or antioxidant protection first? Those are three different serums, and the order you tackle them in matters more than the strength of any one of them.
Why one treatment serum is usually enough
Most routines are built by accumulation. Something worked once, so it stayed. Something was recommended, so it was added. Nothing ever leaves.
We work on one serum in the morning and one in the evening, each with a clear purpose. Not because more is forbidden, but because stacking serums does not multiply the result. It multiplies the variables. Every additional formula is another set of ingredients, another opportunity for interaction, and one more thing to eliminate when your skin starts objecting and you have no idea which bottle caused it.
For sensitive, reactive skin, that clarity is not a nice-to-have. It is the whole strategy.
What about the pre-serum?
Fair question, since it looks like a second serum. Cell Resilience is a serum. We call it a pre-serum for one practical reason: it is gel-based and lighter than a treatment serum, so it goes on first. It hydrates and prepares the skin so the treatment serum that follows can do its job on a stable, comfortable base.
Think of the routine as one foundation serum followed by one treatment serum, not several treatment serums competing to do overlapping jobs.
Which NAYA serum is right for your skin?
NAYA serums are organised around the skin problem they are designed to address. The aim is not to collect them all. It is to identify the concern that matters most now and give the right formula enough consistency to do its work. You can see the full range in our serums and treatments collection.
- Tightness, dehydration and easily unsettled skin Cell Resilience Serum is our lightweight foundation serum. It hydrates, supports barrier resilience and prepares the skin for the treatment serum that follows. Choose it when your skin feels tight, depleted, fragile or unable to tolerate much.
- Dullness and tired-looking skin Everyday Glow Serum is the daily treatment for skin that looks flat, tired or lacking in radiance. It combines antioxidant and glow support for a fresher, healthier-looking complexion without an aggressive brightening approach.
- Redness, flushing, stinging and reactivity NeuroCalm Serum is designed for skin that feels stressed and reacts easily. Neuro-soothing peptides and azelaic-pathway support target the appearance of redness and sensations of discomfort while helping the skin become more resilient over time.
- Fine lines, loss of firmness and depleted-looking skin Exo Timeless Regen Serum is our concentrated longevity treatment. Plant-derived exosome technology and six peptides target visible fine lines, loss of firmness and skin that looks depleted by age, stress and environmental exposure.
- Uneven texture, pigmentation and advanced renewal Radiance Reborn Serum is our retinal treatment for uneven texture, fine lines and uneven tone. It is the stronger renewal step in the range and should be introduced gradually in the evening once the skin is settled.
If you are not sure which of those describes your skin right now, do not guess. Our Skin Quiz will narrow it down in a few minutes, or you can book a consultation with me and we will work it out together. I would rather you bought the right one thing than the wrong three.
How to use a serum
Pre-serum, then treatment serum, then moisturiser. The rule is lightest to richest.
Cleanse, then Cell Resilience on clean and slightly damp skin, then your treatment serum, then moisturiser, then SPF in the morning.
Hydrating serums usually spread comfortably over slightly damp skin. More intensive treatments, including retinal, should be applied according to their own instructions and may be better tolerated on dry skin. If you are layering more than one step, give each a moment to settle rather than stacking them wet, or you will get pilling and blame the wrong product. There is a fuller breakdown in our layering guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you choose the right face serum?
Start with what your skin is doing now rather than what type you were told you are. Skin changes with the seasons, hormones and stress. Identify the one concern that matters most at the moment, whether that is dryness, redness, uneven tone or visible ageing, and choose a serum built for that. One serum doing a clear job beats three doing overlapping ones.
How many serums do you actually need?
At NAYA we work on one serum in the morning and one in the evening, each with a clear purpose. Stacking several serums does not multiply the result. It multiplies the variables, which makes it harder to know what is helping and what your skin is reacting to. That matters more if your skin is sensitive or reactive.
Do you apply serum before or after moisturiser?
Serum first, then moisturiser. The general rule is lightest to richest texture. Apply your serum to clean, slightly damp skin, then follow with moisturiser, and sunscreen last in the morning.
What does a face serum actually do?
The serum is the treat step. It is the product in a routine built to deliver active ingredients at a meaningful dose to the concern you want addressed, which is why it is lighter and more fluid than a cream. Well-formulated serums are the most effective part of a routine. The caveat is that serum is a category name, not a certification: any brand can print the word without putting anything meaningful inside. Judge the formulation, not the label.
Which NAYA serum is right for me?
It depends on what your skin needs right now. Cell Resilience Serum is the pre-serum: gel-based and lighter, it goes first to hydrate and prepare the skin. Everyday Glow Serum is for daily radiance and antioxidant support. NeuroCalm Serum is for redness and reactivity. Exo Timeless Regen Serum is for visible ageing and environmental stress. Radiance Reborn Serum is our retinal step for renewal. If you are unsure, the Skin Quiz or a consultation will narrow it down faster than guessing.
What is the best serum for mature or sensitive skin?
There is no single best serum, and any brand telling you otherwise is selling rather than advising. For mature skin the useful question is whether you need barrier support, renewal or antioxidant protection first. For sensitive skin, the gentlest formula you will actually keep using consistently will outperform a stronger one you abandon after a fortnight.
